It’s been awhile, but after a brief hiatus – Fleet Week is back in New York City! Fleet Week New York, now in its 26th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It’s an opportunity for the citizens to enjoy patriotic fun and meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen plus there are ship tours and events throughout the city all week long.
Nearly 1,500 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen are scheduled to participate in Fleet Week New York this year and I couldn’t wait to get into the mix and discover all the things to love about Fleet Week in the epicenter – Times Square New York. Check out just a few things that I love about NYC Fleet Week and how you can get in on all the free Fleet Week fun below.
Before I could make my usual stop inside of the Duane Reade on 42nd / 8th Avenue, I ran into this group of friendly service men and woman. I asked them where were they were coming from and they unanimously responded – Broadway! They had just come back from seeing a matinee show of Aladdin on Broadway. When I asked them where they were headed next, to my surprise – they were headed to Duane Reade for a few quick snacks!
After walking with this super fun group to Duane Reade, I had to pick up a few snacks and goodies for a fun filled day of my own.
While inside Duane Reade, I grabbed a few hydrating essentials for surviving a full day of Fleet Week adventure in the city. Lip balm, hand cream and coconut water are definitely my everyday must-haves while in NYC. Up next? Taking in the sights with a some people watching in Times Square!
There’s always something fun and exciting to do during Fleet Week. You can take a tour of active duty ships, attend a patriotic event or simply meet and greet US service men and women throughout Times Square — all for free!
Another thing that I love about Fleet Week is the opportunity to board a naval ship (without having to enlist as a service officer). Taking a tour of active duty ships will definitely get you in the Fleet Week spirit all weekend long – but get there early. Ship tours are held during the week in Manhattan and in Staten Island from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fleet Week New York is going on now until Tuesday, May 27th.
To get into the Memorial Day weekend spirit, all weekend long I’ll be out taking ship tours, thanking service men and women and maybe even capturing a selfie with a sailor or two (#SelfieWithASailor). The city filled with heroic military men and women (happy and healthy) is just one of the reasons I love Fleet Week New York, what’s yours?
