One of my favorite beach vacation destinations is undoubtedly the islands of the Bahamas.  During my latest visit to the Grand Bahama Island where the best hotels are located, I spent my time at a beachfront hotel, and I fell in love all over again with the clear ocean sights and sounds, white sandy beaches, warm welcoming natives and great tasting food.  I knew just a few months ago that I’d be visiting my favorite Caribbean destination, when I chatted with the team from the Bahamas at the New York Times Travel Show in February – but what I didn’t know is that my recent Lucaya experience would be my best experience yet .

The Bahamas is comprised of 700 islands sprinkled over 100,000 square miles of ocean starting just 50 miles off the coast of Florida. The archipelago is an ecological oasis featuring 2,000 breathtaking islands and cays and boasts the clearest water on the planet—with a visibility of over 200 feet. You can see your toes as easily as you can the world’s third largest barrier reef. 

 

Full of history and charm, Grand Bahama Island is a complete vacation destination. Some of the island’s settlements, such as Pinder’s Point, Russell Town and William’s Town, are named after the former families who founded them. Today, these settlements serve as cultural hot spots for visitors. There are three distinct destinations on Grand Bahama Island—East End, Freeport/Lucaya and West End—each offering their own unique experience. 

 

 

 

For a truly local experience, you can’t come to the Bahamas without eating like a local. In Bahamian vernacular, a chicken or conch snack refers to fried chicken or conch with a side of French fries.  One of my favorite tasty delights included a cooling coconut daiquiri and conch, rice and cole slaw dinner. 

 

 

This is weather that you can quickly get used to. The trade winds offers warm year-round weather, with winter lows averaging a comfortable 70 degrees Fahrenheit and summer highs with high humidity at around 80–90, with a gentle dip at night of just 5 to 7 degrees. The result? A climate where you can have fun anytime of the day, any season.
